چکیده

Most existing workflow management systems (WFMSs) are based on a client/server architecture. This architecture simplifies the overall design but it does not match the distributed nature of workflow applicationsand imposes severe limitations in terms of scalability and reliability. Moreover, workflow engines are not very sophisticated in terms of data management, forgetting the fact that workflow is, to a great extent, data flow. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture to address the issue of data management in a WFMS. This architecture is based on a fully distributed workflow engine for control flow, plus a set of loosely synchronized replicated databases for data flow. The resulting system offers greater robustness and reliability as well as much better data handling capabilities than existing approaches. To better illustrate this novel architecture and its implications, two commercial systems are employed in this paper: FlowMark, as the workflow engine, and the replication capabilities of Lotus Notes, as the support system for distributed

An Agent-Based Coordination Model on Workflow Databases

Workflow management, one of the important technologies for supporting collaborative work, requires database technologies like distributed data management or transaction management. However, as workflow management systems have several heterogeneities like heterogeneity about agents, spatial heterogeneity, temporal heterogeneity, etc., collaboration model for workflow management should resolve th...

Challenges in Managing Implicit and Abstract Provenance Data: Experiences with ProvManager

Running scientific workflows in distributed and heterogeneous environments has been motivating the definition of provenance gathering approaches that are loosely coupled to workflow management systems. We have developed a provenance management system named ProvManager to manage provenance data in distributed and heterogeneous environments independent of a specific Scientific Workflow Management...

Towards a Grid Platform for Scientific Workflows Management

Workflow management systems allow the users to develop complex applications at a higher level, by orchestrating functional components without handling the implementation details. Although a wide range of workflow engines are developed in enterprise environments, the open source engines available for scientific applications lack some functionalities or are too difficult to use for non-specialist...

A Scalable Agent-Based Workflow Management System for Business Process Management Environments

To accommodate the rapidly evolving business environments, there is a need for workflow management systems that can activate intra organizational business processes, in an efficient way. In this paper an Agent-Based Workflow Management System (AB-WfMS) is presented with the aim of supporting this issue through the adoption of agent technology. The proposed enterprise architecture has set apart ...
